How to choose your estate agent

The house selling public have never had so much choice regarding which agent to appoint to move them and / or simply sell a property.  The range of potential sales spans from upsizing due to changing family needs, downsizing for a host of reasons, relocation, work moves, education-motivated moves, death, divorce / separation….the list goes on.  What links all though is the decision clients have to make regarding who to work with and in a crowded marketplace, choice can make the decision harder.

Any respectable agent needs to be able to demonstrate really solid, long-term knowledge of the local market they operate in and should have ample evidence of relevant sales to support their position as the logical choice.  It’s an incredibly nuanced dynamic though and our view is that clients need an agent who can demonstrate the above whilst not letting those aspects overly dominate their ‘pitch’ to the client.

Our experience as Surrey Estate Agents is that the ability to really listen well and understand the clients’ specific needs and crucially what their underlying motivation is will always remain key to establishing the foundations of a strong professional relationship.  The relationship between Estate Agent and client(s) is an unusual one, characterised by periods of sometimes intense communication and no shortage of (wholly understandable) emotion for some and your Estate Agent needs to be able to both set and control the temperature throughout the transaction whilst intimately guiding a wide range of personalities to the conclusion all parties seek but can occasionally lose sight of.  You should feel able to swiftly establish a rapport and bond with your agent from the moment you meet at the valuation and this will be a feature of your transaction from beginning to end.  Trust is built quickly in house sales and moves generally and above all else, it helps immensely if you respect and like working together.
